Arland Ruth Larsen died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 at the West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody. She was 82.
She was born Aug. 31, 1928 in Roscoe, S.D., to Charles Fischer and Dorothy M. Fischer. She attended school through the 12th grade in Iteswich, S.D. In 1947 she came to Wyoming to work at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center.
While working there she met Paul Larsen, who was also working at the center. Later, Arland worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Cody and then the Department of Selective Service in Powell. She and Paul were married June 13, 1949 in Billings. They lived at the relocation center for a short time and then moved to Powell. Arland retired from the Selective Service in the 60s, when the government no longer used the draft board.
Arland and Paul built a new house in Powell in 1953. They enjoyed boating and fishing and spent many hours on Buffalo Bill Reservoir, dreaming of building a beautiful home on the side of the hill facing the lake. They completed their home on Rattle Snake Mountain and moved there in August of 1992. From their picturesque windows they enjoyed the changing scenery across the lake or looking up the canyon toward the North Fork.
Arland's family will remember her as a quiet woman who enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family members when they visited her. She will be remembered as a very petite woman with an iron will. When she decided to do something, she was determined, but she also was quick to smile and enjoyed a good joke.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Robert Larsen, her son Paul John Larsen and her parents, Charles and Dorothy Fischer.
She is survived by her two sisters Mavis Faeth of Sacramento, Calif., and Dorothy Smith of Estelinne, S.D., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home. A viewing will be held the same day at 10 a.m. with interment at Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell. Pastor George Pasek of the Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.thompsonfuneral.net.
