Betty Louise Rockhold was born August 6, 1921 at the Powell, Wyoming farm home to Frances (Bartels) Smith and Otto F. Smith. She grew up on the farm a mile north of Star School which she attended her first four grades. Consolidation of all rural schools meant the rest of her schooling was in Powell, graduating with the class of 1939.
She became a bookkeeper for O.K. Transportation, later named Dick Jones Trucking, servicing there until her marriage to Bob Bullock in 1945. She resigned to be a farmer’s wife but he was accidentally killed in 1947. Betty went back to work at Dick Jones Trucking until marriage to Jack Rockhold in 1950 when they moved to her farm. Jack died in 2003.
The most significant and rewarding time of her life were the sixties and seventies when she and Jack adopted three babies. Life was centered around their upbringing. School vacations meant trips to Iowa every year, Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, many fun times at the Rockhold and Smith cabins and much more. Betty especially loved little folks and particularly family members.
Some of Betty’s most memorable travels include visiting her son’s family in Colorado; a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, to visit nephew Warren and family; vacation in Hawaii and Fiji Islands. When she was 85 she took the trip of a lifetime to New Zealand and enjoyed a hot air balloon ride with her daughter and son and families.
A life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday school teacher, sponsor of college young people, an elder, a deacon and church treasurer for nine years. She had been a 4-H leader and a Girl Scout leader. Betty was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary and a long-time member of O’Donnell Extension club.
Surviving Betty is her son Steve Rockhold and daughter-in-law, Tammy (Vogt) of Arvada, Colorado; daughter Virginia Mangin and son-in-law, David Mangin of Methven, New Zealand; granddaughters, Terra Rockhold of Billings, Montana; Brittany Lee of Alamogordo, New Mexico; Emily and Leesa Rockhold of Arvada, Colorado; Aimee and Timothy Mangin of Methven, New Zealand; and Daniel Rockhold of Van Buren, Maine; brother Denman Smith and sister-in-law Janet Smith of Kent, Washington; and sister-in-laws, Jeannette and Shirley Smith both of Powell, WY. Also survivors are many nieces, nephews and great grand- children. Proceeding her in death was husband Jack Rockhold; son Dean Rockhold; parents Pete and Francis Smith; sisters, Dorothy Cline, and brothers, Dick & Clifton Smith.
Betty spent her final days on earth surrounded by family and friends, comfortable and at peace. We’ll miss her dearly, she was just such a good person to be with, but know she is in a better place with the Lord. She was an amazing woman, one we could all wish to emulate.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Betty's name to the American Legion Auxilliary Scholarship Fund.
