Doreen Welborn

Doreen Welborn died Monday, May 2, at the Powell Valley Care Center.  She was 85.  

She was born to Emil Albert and Ottlie Marie (Bulgrein) Miller on March 14, 1926 in Hot Springs, SD.  Upon graduating from high school, for a summer job she manned a fire outlook tower in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  She was the first woman to have such a position.  She went on to nurse's training at St. Luke's in Denver, CO.  She completed her training at Battle Mountain Veteran's Hospital in Hot Springs.  Doreen then moved to Casper, WY, where she met Howard Welborn, and they were married on November 26th, 1952.  To this union two children were born, Patricia Ann and Michael Eugene.

Over the years, Doreen worked as an office nurse and bookkeeper.  She retired and moved to Powell in 1981, where she worked in various doctor's offices.  She loved her kids and her grandkids.  She enjoyed bowling, growing roses, and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1988.  

Survivors include her children, Patricia (Nick) Kerwin of Powell, Michael (Charmaine), Welborn of Lafayette, LA; grandchildren, James Kerwin of Powell, Travis Kerwin of Cedar Rapids, IA, Christina Welborn of Lafayette, LA, Justin Welborn of Baton Rouge, LA, and Philip Welborn of Houston, TX; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and services were held at Thompson Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of lfowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Powell Senior Center, the Special Olympics, or the charity of your choice in Doreen's name.
