Eugene “Gene” David Spiering, 71, passed away peacefully in his home on March 17, 2025, in the loving arms of his wife Susan and surrounded by family. Gene was born to Jim and Lois Spiering, April 25, 1953. He spent his younger years working on the family farm alongside his four brothers. After attending all 12 years of school in Powell, he later went on to the University of Utah and received a bachelor’s degree in geology.
He started his career working in petroleum geology. He went on to learn uranium exploration and worked many years in the Arizona Strip where he found several large deposits of high grade uranium. While working in the uranium industry, he encountered a world renown gold geologist who inspired him to move into gold exploration. He was offered a job as exploration manager at what became the largest gold mine deposit in Spain. With that company, he was tasked with going out and evaluating mine potential all over the world. He spent 14 years in Spain. In 2002, he reconnected with his high school sweetheart and in 2007 they were married. He was given an opportunity to work for a relatively new uranium exploration company in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He and his wife Susi moved to Vancouver in 2006 and were there for 12 years until moving back to the farm in 2018 to semi-retire. They have lived there until the time of his death. Gene was always an adventurous person with a great sense of humor. He was an avid sailor and he and Susi enjoyed many years sailing in Spain and Canada.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Michael Spiering. He is survived by his four brothers and their wives: Jerry (Lorraine) Spiering of Buffalo, Wyoming, Ken (Jeanie) Spiering of Spokane, Washington, Kelly (Sylvia) Spiering and Tom (Janet) Spiering of Powell. He is also survived by his children, Elliot (Arantxa) and their three children Kira, Sophia and Liam of Cedar City, Utah; Jessica (Kelly) Cuillard and their children Riley, Toa, Ava and Gia; Monica Lee and children Jackson, Jayden, Mikenna and Kali of St. George, Utah; and stepchildren Kaci (Jason) Coble and their three kids Danika, Kenna and Colton of Big Horn, Wyoming. Rosary will be held at 5 p.m. March 21, 2025 with the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2025 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, Powell, Wyoming.
