Gwynn Wilbur Marshall
April 22, 1924 — January 7, 2013
G.W. Marshall was born the youngest of five children, on April 22, 1924 in Zuni, New Mexico to Jesse Gwynn Marshall and Mary Elizabeth Griffin Marshall. His dad was a doctor on the Zuni reservation.
The family moved back to Canton, Oklahoma when he was very young. His dad died shortly after, and the family managed a living on the farm during the Great Depression. He attended school in Canton, graduating Salutatorian of his high school class.
He was a veteran of WWII, one of the Greatest Generation, serving in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. G.W. was an armorer gunner in the Bomb Squadron 9th Bomber Group, on a B-29 Super Fortress airplane, flying missions from Tinian to Japan, on a plane named Man O'War II. It was a 3000 mile round trip flight taking 15 hours.
After the war he worked as a surveyor on several government projects in Oklahoma and Kansas, and eventually went to work for the Standard Oil Company in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It was there that he met Nadean Conway and they married on May 21, 1949 in Gainesville, Texas.
He was transferred to Powell, Wyoming in 1952. He took to Wyoming with its open spaces and its solitude, and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He also farmed at Garland and south of Powell.
A son, John Jesse, preceded him in death. He is survived by Nadean, his wife of 63 years; three children: Gwendolyn, Randy, and Tandy; and six grandsons and families: Bryan (Amber), children - Bryan Anthony and Connor; John Randall (Hannah), children- Brady and Avery; Nathan Edwards (Suzanne); Justin (Mallory), children - Will and Derrick; Jason (Jessica), child —Jace; Matt Edwards (Emily).
A memorial service with military honors will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2013 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Powell, Wyoming.
