Jake passed away peacefully early March 7, 2012 at the Powell Valley Healthcare Center. Jewell Harris Jacobs was born January 9, 1918 in Daykin, Nebraska to Harrison(Harry) and Harriet (Fogg) Jacobs, the second of seven children. He attended school in Western, Nebraska graduating from high school in 1935. In 1936 on his way to Idaho he traveled to Powell, stopping to visit friends and never left.
On July 3, 1941 he married Roberta Kathryn Jamieson. For the next four years of his life he served in the United States Navy SeaBees stationed in the South Pacific. Returning to Powell he worked various jobs, truck driving, general contracting and in 1952 moved to the Willwood and began farming. With his brother Kerm, he formed Jacobs Brothers Farm. For many years he farmed, growing sugar beets, beans, grain, and hay. Several of those years he was honored by Great Western Sugar Company for his sugar beets. In 1982 he retired from farming and settled into a life of leisure.
During this time he spent time at horseshoe pitching contests, attending World Horseshoe Tournaments twice. He also enjoyed traveling around the Big Horn Basin to various tournaments. He now had time to do some fishing, both summer and ice in the winter. His greatest joy, however, were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jake served several years as President of the Senior Citizens and was a member of American Legion Post # 26. He enjoyed the last six months as a resident of Rocky Mountain Manor.
Survivors include his daughter, Amy Mayes of Riverton; grandchildren, Kathryn (Daryle) Lewis of Minden, Nevada; Rebecca (Tony) Kenyon of Riverton; and Jon (Alison) Mayes of Riverton. He was Grandpa “Grumps†and Grandpa “Jake†to his great-grandchildren; Abigail, Evan, and Erin Lewis, Tosha and Tessa Kenyon, and Mackenzie and Kayson Mayes. He is also survived by sisters; Gwen Baxter, Belle Jones, Pat Jones, and Barb Werbelow, and brother Larry Jacobs.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Roberta, parents, brother Kermit Jacobs, son-in-law Doyal Mayes, and great- granddaughter Talley Jewell Kenyon.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at Crown Hill Cemetery with Military rites. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012. Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A reception will follow the service at Rocky Mountain Manor. Memorials may be made to the Rocky Mountain Manor Memorial Fund or one of donor’s choice.
