LaMoine William (Boomer) Busboom, of Cody, left this earthly life on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024 at the age of 79 at Powell Valley Healthcare surrounded by loved ones. He was born on Jan. 21, 1944 to Glen and Helen (Brown) Busboom in Hastings, Nebraska.
Growing up on a farm in the Doniphan area, he attended Rosedale grade school, then Hastings High School, graduating in 1962. Throughout high school and eager to buy his first car, he worked at a grocery store and in heavy construction on building dams for the government.
In 1964 he married Ardyce Meyer and together they had two children, Jeff and Brenda. Also in 1964 he went to work for Hastings Irrigation Pipe Company. He taught evening classes in welding at the community college and enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball for a number of years.
In 1974 he relocated the family to Powell, Wyoming, to manage the new Hastings Irrigation plant being built in Powell. In 1977 he became a partner in River Valley Irrigation providing irrigation systems for the Basin. He started his own business — Boomer’s Irrigation & Fabrication — in the early 1980s providing irrigation systems and supplies for area farmers and ranchers and fabrication services — everything from truck boxes to bear-proof containers and camp equipment for the next 30 plus years. He often made the claim that he helped keep the Basin greener with more modern irrigation methods.
During his years in Hastings he built and raced stock cars, also restoring and building roadsters. His love of cars was not left behind in moving to Powell and he continued to build and restore cars and roadsters as a hobby, always having a new project in the works. He was an avid NHRA drag racing and NASCAR racing fan.
Family was special to him and he enjoyed nothing more than taking the grandkids and family camping and fishing. He brought back many colorful stories of elk hunting trips to Sunlight and Hunter Peak with friends.
Boomer was a believer in God but as he aged he became a non-denomination believer saying he could better communicate with God on a mountain top or by a stream than he could stuffed in a church pew.
Declining health caused him to close his business and he continued to fight a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease after being diagnosed in 2003. After living in Powell for 42 years, Boomer and Ardyce moved to Cody in 2018 and for the past year he has resided in Cody Regional Health Long Term Care Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Jeff (Rhonda) Busboom of Hastings, Nebraska; daughter Brenda (Tracy) McCullough of Powell; grandchildren Alexis Pace of Billings, Montana; Greg and John Busboom of Hastings, Nebraska; Stephanie (Alex) Roberts of Cody; Sean McCullough of Billings, Montana; and Sara McCullough of Laramie; sister Glenda Davis of Scottsdale, Arizona; sisters-in-law Barbara and Marlene, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life and luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Eagles Club at 131 North Clark in Powell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation at parkinsonfoundation.org; St. Jude Children’s Hospital at stjude.org; or your local animal shelter.
Thompson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
