Robert Conrad Greenwald, 96, passed away peacefully at Powell Valley Health Care in Powell, WY, surrounded by the love of his family on December 7, 2024. Bob was born March 13, 1928, to Conrad and Mary (Flack) Greenwald in Torrington, Goshen, WY. He was raised by his grandparents, Henry and Molly (Schlundt) Flack, in Clearmont, Sheridan, Wyoming. Bob graduated from Clearmont High School in 1947 with straight A’s. He attended school and worked on the family farm where he developed a strong work ethic, which he passed down to his four children. He had fond memories of farming and the sugar beet harvests of his youth.

At 18 years of age, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving for 18 months. His basic training was at Fort Lewis, WA followed by Camp Kilmore, NJ where he was trained in Morse Code and as a radio operator. He was a member of the 45th Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad – Troop A. He then served at the Panama Canal to guard and protect making the rank of Corporal T/5 Technician fifth class. He was honorably discharged in May 1948.

He was in the Army Reserves for two years before being recalled into active service in July 1950 during the Korean War. He trained as a radio repairman at Fort Monmouth, NJ and made rank as Private First Class. He belonged to Company G - Signal Training Regiment. He finished his military service as part of Company H – 6219 Ranger Corps, where he was honorably discharged for a second time in April 1952.

Bob was a “jack of all trades” and some of his jobs included: farming, railroad, sugar beet factory, oil rig and finishing with Kylander Construction doing asphalt work and road construction. He could outwork men half his age and not break a sweat. He was teased by his daughters often about “Bob-ing out” so much, meaning he was always ready to work and to do it now. He was a “git-er-done” kind of man! He was so proud of all the paving jobs done in the Big Horn Basin while working for Kylander. If you ever drove by a site where the crew was working, you would notice that Bob was the fella NOT leaning on his shovel. If you needed someone to roll fresh asphalt to perfection, then Bob was your man!

Bob was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved going to the clubs to meet friends, bet on football contests, watch the horse races, and enjoy a cold beverage. He loved participating in the Powell Tribune football contest, winning many times. He was a lifelong Raiders fan. He loved gardening and raising his hot peppers to share with friends and family. He loved to make new friends and did it easily. People seemed to be drawn to him and enjoyed his stories. 

 Bob loved dogs, especially visiting his daughter Leah’s and Bill’s dogs who looked forward to their weekend bone treats.

 Bob married Joyce (Hert), the love of his life, on February 5, 1952, in Billings, MT. Together they raised four children. Bob and Joyce were married for 56 years. His dear Joyce preceded him in death November 11, 2008.

Bob is survived by his four children, Gary (Jeanne) Greenwald and Leah (Bill) Gullion – Powell, WY; Gail (Bill) Fisher and Janet (Keven) Bentz – Billings, MT. Seven grandchildren, Trevor (Kristen) Greenwald and Trisha (Jamison) Ziegler - Pinedale, WY; Trent (Kristin) Greenwald – Powell, WY; Kari (Brodie) Cooney and Austin Bentz – Missoula, MT; Michelle Wirth and Nick Bentz – Billings, MT. Ten great-grandchildren, Lauryn Greenwald, Aiden and Kaylen Greenwald – Powell, WY, Kade, Konner and Kabree Ziegler – Pinedale, WY; Kieran and Gage Cooney, – Missoula, MT; Maria Bentz – Billings, MT, and Liam Fouts - Butte, MT.

Even though Bob had been visually impaired the last many years, he was tough as nails and lived independently. Bob told his son that he never dreamed of living to be 96 years of age, but he did and we’re all so grateful to have had him in our lives that long. Cremation has taken place and graveside services with military honors will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell, WY, in the Spring 2025, with date to be announced. Thompson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Honorary pall bearers will be his grandsons, grandsons-in-law, and great grandsons.
