Stephen Oliver Strickland, affectionately known as Steve passed away peacefully at his home in Powell Wyoming, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with a terminal illness. He was born on September 30, 1959, in Mount Olive, North Carolina, to Ruby and George Strickland.
Steve led an incredible life filled with dedication, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family. His career began at Mt Olive Pickle during his teenage years. After completing his education, he joined Kemp Furniture until its closure. Subsequently, he found his calling at Georgia Pacific Dudley NC Comply division and dedicated over 32 years of his life to the company. Steve's strong work ethic earned him the reputation of being one of the hardest-working men in his department.
Although Steve excelled professionally, it was in his personal life where he truly blossomed. He embarked on his coaching journey by assisting Cheryl in mentoring their oldest daughter Courtney in t-ball and older kids in softball. These early endeavors into the world of sports coaching laid the foundation for countless treasured memories. One particular fond recollection was spending nights on the pier after fishing expeditions. Tirelessly working during the day didn't deter him from heading straight to the beach with Cheryl as soon as he finished work. While Cheryl fished he strolled along the sandy shores with Stephanie, Steve would engage in friendly conversations with fellow beachgoers. He derived immense joy from watching Stephanie play soccer and their trip to Florida's Disney Wide World of Sports remains etched as one of their most cherished adventures. Steve also took pleasure in supporting UMO alongside Cheryl as they watched both boys' and girls' soccer teams compete. Additionally, he shared a special connection with Cheryl's cousins Clay and Evan Newton and avidly followed Evan throughout his soccer career.
Steve possessed a dry sense of humor that often entertained those around him. Although he believed his jokes were comedic gold, they didn't always land as intended. Despite this, his endearing personality endeared him to everyone he encountered. In his younger years, he enjoyed running dogs and embarking on hunting excursions, particularly when accompanied by his brothers and nephews. He cherished his family dearly and provided for them with unwavering dedication until his final moments. NASCAR racing and watching sports with Cheryl brought him immense pleasure, and in recent years he developed a newfound passion for college football. Nevertheless, soccer remained his all-time favorite sport. Another love of Steve's was exploring Yellowstone National Park and marveling at the breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife inhabiting the vast Wyoming landscape.
Steve's hobbies intertwined with his gastronomic preferences. He reveled in spicing up meals with hot sauce and ketchup, ensuring every dish had their delightful presence. French fries were never complete without a generous serving of ketchup - his signature touch. Amongst his favorite culinary delights were North Carolina barbecue, peanut butter, hot dogs, and milkshakes.
In celebrating the accomplishments that Steve held dearest to his heart, being a father and a papi ranked at the pinnacle. His love knew no bounds when it came to his family, nurturing deep bonds that will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to experience them.
