Violet Ruth Brittain

Violet Ruth Dalton Brittain died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. She had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus in January of this year. She was 87.

Violet was born Sept. 8, 1924 in Jenny Lind, Ark., to Ruth and Emery Dalton.

Violet met the love of her life, Raymond Brittain, at Narbonne High School in Lomita, Calif. They were married Sept. 12, 1942 in Seattle. They were married for 69 years.

During World War II, she was a riveter helping build Boeing B-17 bombers. Her job description became known as “Rosie the Riveter.” Later she became a member of the National Rosie the Riveter Organization.

After the war, Raymond and Violet moved to the Bakersfield/Delano, Calif. area. Raymond became the sergeant in charge of the sheriff sub-station and Violet was the on-call sheriff’s matron. Her primary responsibility and enjoyment was raising two daughters and creating a loving home.

She was a seamstress, great cook and gardener. She created fond memories for family and friends. Violet enjoyed singing, dancing, camping, water skiing, traveling, hand-work and porcelain/china painting. Violet believed we should explore our country first, which she and Ray did. They went through every state in the Union. They went on to see some of the rest of the world, including southern Europe, northern Africa and China.

Violet was a hospital auxiliary volunteer for 24 years at two hospitals. She supported Raymond’s active involvement with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Organization. They both attended the First Southern Baptist Church since they moved to Powell 12 years ago.

Violet is survived by her husband, Raymond Albert Brittain; children, Constance Lee Brittain and Corrine (Scott) Deans; granddaughters Magen Brittain Deans and Mariah Rae Morgan; great-grandchildren Alexis Reannon Pryor and Edward Lee Morgan.

She was thankful to the Lord for the life he gave her.

The family appreciates all the acts of kindness that have been expressed.

Thompson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
